If you’re looking for a unique countertop with bags of design versatility and the durability to stand up to anything, bamboo is a fantastic choice.
There’s no surprise that bamboo is becoming a sought-after choice in the UK. Apart from its aesthetics, it delivers the perfect balance of style, functionality and price and looks equally at home in traditional or contemporary kitchens. Our carbonised bamboo countertops are heated under controlled conditions, so the sugars in the fibres caramelise and produce a warm brown throughout the material, giving them a richness and depth that rivals oak without the price tag.
Bamboo is naturally durable and resilient, giving hardwoods like oak a run for their money. Even better, it’s naturally antimicrobial and water-resistant, making it the perfect choice for a busy family kitchen. What’s more, eco friendly bamboo worktops are a renewable, sustainable choice, so if you’re creating an eco-conscious workspace, you can buy and install them with complete confidence.
If you’re considering bamboo worktops, congratulations: they’re an eco-savvy choice with multiple benefits for your home. But do they really live up to the hype? These are the pros and cons of choosing bamboo countertops for your kitchen remodel:
Sustainability
Bamboo is incredibly fast-growing and needs little sunlight or water, giving it exceptional eco-credentials. Its renewable nature and properties like mould and bacteria resistance also give it the edge over some hardwoods.
Durability
You might be surprised to learn that some bamboo worktops are harder than oak, but this material can actually be as durable as wood. With the proper care and maintenance, it can also last a lifetime, combining beauty and durability and making it a great home investment.
Aesthetics
If you want your kitchen to be the heart of the home and radiate a warm cosiness, bamboo worktops are an ideal choice. The rich glow of our carbonised bamboo countertops with their regular grain pattern adds a unique aesthetic to any kitchen remodel.
Requires maintenance
Like any worktops, bamboo work surfaces need periodic resealing to maintain their durability and good looks. Using cutting boards and trivets is essential to keeping your worktops scorch- and scratch-free, but with the right care, they’re every bit as resilient as hardwood countertops.
Limited choice of colours and designs
You won’t find the same range of grains and hues as you will with wood worktops, but if you’re attracted to natural aesthetics and are looking for unique visual appeal, bamboo worktops could be the perfect choice for your new kitchen.
What makes eco friendly bamboo worktops such a sustainable choice?
There are well over a thousand different types of bamboo in the world, and it’s long been a staple in Asian culture, where it’s used as a building material, water filter and paper substitute.
Bamboo is actually a grass and has an incredibly rapid growth rate. Unlike trees, which mature over hundreds of years and are at risk of deforestation, bamboo matures in just 4-6 years, making it a truly renewable source for your new worktops.
What’s more, bamboo is incredibly hardy and can grow just about anywhere. It doesn’t require fertilisers or chemicals, and needs very little water. Unlike a tree, the plant continually puts out new shoots, so harvesting is low-impact and doesn’t destroy the soil or local ecosystem.
Even better, when you’re considering a sustainable worktop material, it’s good to know that bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide and releases more oxygen into the atmosphere than the same area of hardwood trees.
Our carbonised bamboo worktops come from suppliers with the relevant certification, and we work only with well-managed forests that use controlled harvesting methods so panda and lemur habitats are protected. We send any waste materials for recycling as part of our commitment to keep the planet green.
Bamboo worktops are a fantastic choice for anything from sleek contemporary spaces to warm ‘heart of the home’ family kitchens. Getting it right is all about the styling, so here’s how to make the best use of this beautiful, sustainable material.
Bamboo lends itself to waterfall installations, where the worktop runs over the horizontal and vertical surfaces. It’s an easy way to take your kitchen design from functional to fabulous. Alternatively, try showcasing a caramel bamboo island or peninsula against other organic materials such as stone or hardwood.
Bamboo worktops pair beautifully with both modern and traditional cabinetry. Try high-contrast contemporary black or crisp white cabinets, or warm oak for an organic feel. Timeless shaker cabinets are a good match, with a matte finish that highlights your worktops.
Rich creams and chalky off-whites, soft sage greens or deep emeralds, and rich navy or teal all pair beautifully with the warm tones of your bamboo worktop. This versatile material can be moody and dramatic or clean and airy depending on your preferred aesthetic.
There are plenty of options for hardware and other finishing touches. Brass or brushed gold will pick up the honey tones in your worktop, while matte black adds a contemporary edge. Brushed nickel or stainless steel hardware adds a subtle, modern contrast.
If you’re considering this material for a kitchen refit or upgrade, bamboo worktop prices can come as a pleasant surprise. Thanks to lower raw material and manufacturing costs, our carbonised bamboo presents real value for money while offering the durability and aesthetic appeal of hardwoods like oak. Better yet, they’re a stylish alternative to exotic woods like wenge and walnut.
Although bamboo requires regular sealing and oiling to retain its resilience, the effort and upkeep costs are virtually identical to wood worktops making bamboo well worth considering for your showstopper kitchen refit.
Bamboo kitchen worktops are a perfect match for most kitchen styles. With our customised services, you can create the ideal countertop to fit with your design vision, whether that’s custom cutouts, a stunning island or an edging profile that works with your lifestyle.
We recommend that you use our templating and installation service for professional results. Here’s what you need to know about installing bamboo countertops:
Bamboo is an ideal choice for your busy kitchen because it’s naturally antibacterial and resists moisture. But your worktops will still need a maintenance routine to ensure their durability and protect their natural look.
We recommend a three-step approach which is similar to hardwood maintenance:
Clean up any spills immediately to prevent staining or moisture penetration, and wipe down your surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid placing hot pans directly on the surface and never use your worktop as a chopping board. Never use harsh chemicals and dry your worktop after every use.
Oil your worktop every 3-6 months, and around your sink every 2-4 months. Use a food-safe oil and apply according to the directions. Use a soft rag to work the oil into the surface for optimum absorption. Not sure whether your worktop needs oiling? Try the water drop test. If a few drops of water form into a droplet, your counter is properly oiled and protected. If it looks dull and the water sits on the surface, it’s time to reapply a protective product.
Even the most beautiful worktops can get scratched or stained and need a periodic makeover, and bamboo is no different. Depending on the condition of your countertops, sand them annually with 180-grit sandpaper to remove the surface layer, then re-seal with oil or varnish, depending on the finish you prefer.

Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that can grow as much as a metre a day in the right conditions. Native to Asia, it’s an abundant natural resource that is usually harvested every five years during the dry season, and the roots are left untouched so the plant can regenerate. There’s no specific certification for bamboo, but we ensure our worktops are harvested respecting the natural environment.
Definitely, and there are multiple reasons why you should consider this sustainable material for your next kitchen remodel. It’s highly durable, resists dents and scratches like some hardwoods, and is easy to maintain with regular oiling. What’s more, it’s naturally antibacterial and handles moisture extremely well so you don’t have to worry about warping. Plus, it’s surprisingly affordable and adds a unique, eco-friendly touch to any style of kitchen.
Oil is definitely the best product to use on your worktops for several reasons. We recommend a food-safe oil for kitchen use, which creates a soft matte sheen that enhances the beauty of the bamboo while adding protection. Rub in the oil with a soft cloth, then wipe away any excess after 10-15 minutes before reapplying further coats. Oil your worktops regularly for optimum results.
