Buy 20mm Stave Wooden Worktops

Offering a natural warmth and beautiful texture, wooden worktops can be a wonderful addition to a new kitchen. Wooden worktops are available in a selection of different materials and styles, each of which has its own set of unique qualities that can leave your kitchen looking and feeling refreshed, characterful, and incredibly inviting. If you’re looking to buy 20mm stave wooden worktops, here’s everything you need to know about their benefits, which kitchen styles they’re best suited to, and how to care for them to maximise their longevity.

What Are Thin Stave Wooden Worktops?

Also sometimes referred to as narrow block or narrow stave worktops, thin stave work surfaces are solid wood countertops that have been made using numerous narrow pieces of wood. These pieces of wood are securely glued together to create a single flat panel, which celebrates the natural wood grain and the variety of different patterns that exist within this beautiful natural material.

Does Stave Size Really Matter?

There are a variety of different sizes of staves, ranging from very narrow to really quite wide. Although you may initially assume that a few millimetres here or there won’t make too much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, the reality is that even the tiniest details can make a big impact when you’re redesigning your kitchen.

While full stave worktops are made from longer strips of wood, which offer a more understated or pared back look, narrow stave worktops are full of character and offer a natural tonal variation that can bring some added depth and detail to your kitchen design.

Your own personal style and taste should inform your choice, as all solid wood worktops from Top Worktops UK are designed to elevate your kitchen and contribute to the creation of a stylish space that’s also supremely functional.

What Materials Are 20mm Solid Wooden Worktops Made From?

The Top Worktops UK collection contains worktops in a range of different materials, which all have a unique sense of character and charm. Our 20mm solid wood worktops come in both oak and walnut, so there are options here regardless of whether you’re looking to add a richness or a sense of lightness to your kitchen.

Oak

Oak has long been renowned for its natural beauty and its strength, which are just two reasons why it continues to be such a popular material for everything from flooring to barrels, furniture and worktops. Our 20mm stave oak worktops are manufactured to the highest standards and have a country cottage style charm that will work wonderfully in both rustic and more contemporary spaces alike.

Walnut

Similarly to oak, walnut is also a popular wood choice for use within the home as it’s extremely durable and supremely versatile. Our 20mm stave walnut worktops are made using the finest quality European wood and offer a richness that will easily bring a sense of depth and contrast to a variety of different kitchen styles.

Both our oak and walnut worktops come with a square edge as standard, however we can also accommodate requests for different edge profiles if you’re looking for something softer, more round, or with a touch more detail.

Top Reasons To Choose Thin Stave Wooden Worktops

As worktops play such a central role within a kitchen, both in terms of how the space looks and how functional it is, finding the right style really is key to designing a room that works for you and your property. Here are a few reasons why you might want to buy 20mm stave wooden worktops for your upcoming kitchen renovation project.

They’re Durable And Resistant To Bowing And Warping

As a natural material, wood contracts and expands when it’s exposed to changes in temperature and moisture levels. As these are two things that can happen frequently in a kitchen, it’s really important to understand how different types of wooden work surfaces may be affected over time.

Thinner stave worktops are highly resistant to splitting, bowing and warping, as the internal tension is spread across more pieces of wood. So, like all Top Worktops UK work surfaces, they’re highly durable and will stand the test of time in your home when properly cared for and maintained.

They’re Affordable

As narrow stave worktops are made using smaller pieces of wood, they can be significantly more affordable than some of their full stave counterparts. Our oak 20mm stave worktop prices start from £110, and our walnut worktop prices start from £180.

Additionally, narrow stave worktops also contribute significantly to reducing waste during the manufacturing process, making them an environmentally-friendly choice, too!

They’re Overflowing With Character

Thin stave worktops are also often referred to as butcher block worktops, as they’re composed of multiple strips of wood to create a single panel. As well as more joins, this process allows the unique grain of the wood to take a starring role, offering a really characterful overall look.

They Can Be Repaired To Maximise Longevity

Solid wood worktops can be sanded down to remove accidental stains, burns and surface scratches that may appear over time, which is why they tend to have a longer lifespan than many other popular worktop materials. They can also be re-oiled after a light sanding, which is a simple way to give them a new lease of life and a finish that looks brand new.

They’re Suitable For Smaller Kitchens

The narrow profile of the staves offers a clean, minimal inspired look which is well-suited to the smaller kitchens that can be found in many properties throughout the UK. Larger staves can overwhelm more compact spaces, whereas opting for a narrower style can give the look you’re hoping for in a way that suits the proportions of your room.

Top Kitchen Styles Suited To Thin Stave Worktops

Worktops made using thin staves are remarkably versatile, as they have practical and aesthetic qualities that work in a wide range of different interior styles. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are just a few of the top kitchen styles that are perfect for this style of solid wood worktop.

Industrial Chic

Kitchens with an industrial twist have a timeless quality and have been consistently popular since the 1970s, when artists in major creative cities such as London and New York moved into abandoned warehouses, lofts and factories. High-contrast elements are one of the central aspects of a modern industrial kitchen, so combining wooden worktops with painted cabinets and matte black accessories can be a great starting point.

Thin stave worktops offer additional vertical lines, which almost have an architectural quality that aligns well with the ethos of modern industrial chic. The organic wood grain also provides excellent contrast with more rugged elements, such as stainless steel appliances, concrete or tiled floors, and exposed brickwork.

Modern Minimalism

Featuring an abundance of clean lines and a simple profile, 20mm stave worktops are an ideal addition to a minimal or Scandinavian inspired kitchen. Worktops can be paired with flat-panelled or handleless cabinet doors in a light, neutral tone to establish a sense of space and light, all while creating a kitchen that offers optimal levels of functionality.

Thin staves often offer a slightly busier overall look when compared to full staves, which can bring an organic sense of warmth to a modern minimal kitchen without looking too overwhelming or over the top. Here, your worktops can be one of the defining features of your space and bring an element of the outside into your home, which is so central to the Scandinavian minimalism design philosophy.

Contemporary Country Farmhouse

Wooden worktops are ideally suited to a country farmhouse style kitchen and thinner staves will help to offer a modern twist on what is a very classic style. Narrow stave worktops pair beautifully with classic Shaker inspired cabinets in a range of different colours, from light neutrals to calming sage greens and muted blues.

Lighter oak or richer walnut woods work equally well in this style of kitchen, as the wood grain throughout narrow stave worktops will add an additional layer of charm, all while complementing other features within the space such as nickel or brass accessories, a traditional butler sink, and tiled floors.

A Guide To Buying, Installing And Maintaining 20mm Solid Wood Worktops

Much of the installation process remains the same regardless of the size of the staves that have been used to construct your new wooden worktops. Here we run through some of our top installation and maintenance tips, which will help you to achieve a high-quality finish and the opportunity to enjoy your new worktops long into the future.

Purchase Worktops From A Reputable Manufacturer

When you’re getting ready to buy 20mm stave wooden worktops, it’s really important to purchase from an experienced manufacturer to guarantee you’ll receive a high-quality product. This will also help to ensure the delivery process goes smoothly, so that you can start enjoying your new work surfaces ASAP.

Install With Care

It’s really important to make sure that your new 20mm stave wooden worktops have enough support from base cabinets and brackets, as this will ensure they don’t bow or flex over time.

As part of this process, we highly recommend using a spirit level to make sure that your base cabinets are completely level and making any adjustments as needed before installing your new worktops. Additionally, expansion or slotted brackets are recommended when you’re installing your worktops, as this gives the wood space to naturally contract and expand without causing any lasting damage or warping.

Seek Professional Installation Support Where Needed

If you would prefer your new worktops to be professionally installed, we offer a template and installation service, during which our experienced fitters will install your brand new worktops and apply a finishing coat.

Support Longevity With Proper Care And Maintenance

All wooden worktops benefit from some ongoing care and maintenance to ensure their longevity and maintain their beautiful appearance. Our 20mm stave oak worktops are provided untreated as standard, which allows you to finish them to the shade that will best match your kitchen. We also offer a pre-oiling service if preferred, but regardless it’s really important to ensure they’re oiled before installation and re-oiled as needed throughout their lifetime to prevent moisture damage.

FAQs

What do staves mean in relation to wooden kitchen worktops?

Solid wood worktops are made from planks or strips of wood, which are known as staves. Individual staves are seamlessly glued together and expertly finished to form a single, flat surface.

There are several different types of staves, including full staves, which run across the whole length of the worktop and offer a high-end, premium look and finish. Conversely, end grain staves are positioned in a vertical rather than horizontal orientation, which offers an entirely different overall look.

Are 20mm stave wooden worktops thin?

As standard size staves are typically between 38mm and 40mm wide, 20mm options are considered to be thin or narrow, however this doesn’t negatively impact their overall strength or durability.

All stave sizes offer a high-quality finish and excellent durability, however they do have an impact on the overall aesthetic of the worktops. Narrow stave worktops can add a characterful look to a kitchen, as well as being well-suited to spaces with a minimalist, lightweight and contemporary look.
